The main square, Piazza Tasso, is named in honour of the famous author of "Jerusalem Delivered" - Torquato Tasso - who was born in the town. Unmissable are the fumaroles and mud pools including the most famous the Solfatara. The Solfatara is a shallow volcanic crater at Pozzuoli, near Naples. It is a dormant volcano, which still emits gas, jets of steam and tremors. The vapors have been used for medicinal purposes since Roman times. Unmistakable is the smell of sulphur which permeates these areas and which is remarkably similar to the stench of rotten eggs.
